Newtown woman offers Elite Pureed Meals for people with swallowing difficulties

NEWTOWN >> A meal of pureed baked chicken and peas, or steak and green beans, both with mashed potatoes, are at the heart of Colleen McCloskey’s business.

Launched seven months ago, Elite Pureed Meals features premade meals that are baked, low in sodium and fat, with no additives, and pureed for people experiencing swallowing issues due to age or medical conditions.

“This whole container goes from the freezer to the microwave in five minutes,” McCloskey said as she held a portion of shepherd’s pie. “Meal time is fun time now. It’s not like, ‘Oh, my God.’ The whole family’s worrying what are we going to make.”

After three decades in the culinary industry, five years ago, McCloskey began to care for a Paoli couple in their 80s.

“Everything was going fine,” she said. “Slowly things were changing. He was starting to get sick and things were changing. As time went on, he was aspirating and he was having a hard time. I would say to myself, ‘What can I do to help him?’”
